| Welcome to The Griot |

Visitors explore the life and contributions of civil
rights activist Percy Green II
|
Only the second of its kind the country, The Griot
Museum of Black History & Culture opened as The Black
World History Wax Museum in February 1997.
After 10 years of being variously known, we hit
upon what seems to be the perfect name “The Griot
Museum of Black History & Culture” (The Griot”).
Our new name more accurately reflects our
mission and purpose—the keeper of the stories, culture,
and history of Black people.

Our Founder

Lois D. Conley, Founder
|
The Griot
was founded by Lois D. Conley, who has dedicated several
years toward researching African-American history, with
particular emphasis on the Underground Railroad and
Westward Expansion.
Conley was a consultant to the National Park
Services’ study to document the trails that hundreds of
enslaved Blacks used to secure their freedom; lectured
in schools, universities and churches; and has conducted
tours to Black historic sites.
